It doesnt matter whether you are fresh out of college and looking for your first position or whether you are in the throes of middle management seeking your next leap up the career ladder, there will be a time when you need to compete. Other candidates will also apply for the same roles that you have your heart set on. Why should you be offered the job over them? You may have the same qualifications, similar experiences and equally polished resumes. You need to think outside the box to give you the edge and help any potential new employer see your worth. Take a look at these three simple ways you can beat your competition in the job market. The key to gaining a well-paid job in todays competitive marketplace is to have a number of in-demand skills that you excel in and to be able to demonstrate your passion in these areas. Tweet This Upskill Just because you achieved an exceptional final grade from your college degree a decade ago doesnt mean you will automatically be the finest senior leader. Employers dont tend to look at your examination results from when you were fresh out of college. They are more concerned with your current professional development. You need to exploit all of those many in-house training courses you have attended, the workshops you have led and the postgraduate civil engineering degree you studied online and in your own time while working. Showing this commitment to lifelong learning, continually improving your own skillset and remaining relevant within your chosen industry will see you head and shoulders above your competition when any potential employer is perusing applications. And even if youre a last-minute crammer (hello, all nighters), every moment of studying will help you in your job search. glassdoor.com Experience If you have worked in the same job in the same building for the same employer for the past decade, you have shown great loyalty. For a new potential employer, this could also ring alarm bells of complacency. It pays to try and get a varied and dynamic range of work experiences that enable you to work in different departments, take on different responsibilities and utilize different methodologies. You might even want to see a bit of the world and work internationally. During this time you may be able to learn a new language; always an asset when it comes to your career. Taking the plunge and heading abroad shows bravery, resilience and a willingness to be flexible all attributes that potential employers love. Photo by Helloquence on Unsplash Applications When applying for a new position, dont fall into the trap of sending the same cover letter or personal statement for each role. Employers can spot generic templates a mile off and, as every position will be different, so should the application. Do your research, show your knowledge of the company you wish to apply for in your application and explain how you will be an asset to the company, not the other way around. Sell yourself but dont meander down the road of untruths. Draw attention to your experience, your achievements and your positive attributes. Dear Future Me (2018) - When I Grow Up
Dear Future Me (2018) - When I Grow Up This is the seventh time Ive written a Dear Future Me letter. You can read the others from the links back on last years letter, and the idea behind the Dear Future Me letter from the amazeballs woman I stole it from (hi Jess Lively!) right here. While I usually keep part of my letter private, this year Im publishing it all. (Gulp) January 1, 2019 Dear Future Me, The fear and excitement you root for your clients to feel and encourage to follow? I know youve been feeling it recently equal parts confidence and trust alongside terror and insecurity. Theres a simple explanation for this, Michelle: its the year of your Big Dreams. I know that you suspect this, but youve been hiding from it, denying it, shying away from your Shine. No more. Its time to own and step into your legacy work. Its time to step into your own spotlight, solo, and reach those big goals. Your own continually sold out program and the book deal thatll come from it? Youve queued it up this year real good, selling out your discovery group* each time you ran it, getting the results you had hoped for while not compromising the relationships you seek from all your work and projects. The money it brought in this year can be doubled in 2019. Honing your message and making the subsequent changes to your brand, copy and offers was a huge game changer. The fear you had of who and what youd lose was inconsequential compared to those who did find you and became more confident more quickly that you were the right person to help them. It boils down to this: The fulfillment you feel at work is directly related to how much money you make. Dont be afraid to hire more help. Dont be afraid to keep working with consultants. Dont be afraid to invest in a full-on photo shoot. Dont be afraid to limit or totally stop blogging. Dont be afraid to say No to anything outside your zone of genius. Teaching + Speaking + Writing (programs and books) + Coaching alongside Compassion + Abundance + Vulnerability + Shine are the pillars of your 2018 success, both personally and professionally. Being cognizant and shifting to this mindset changes your whole life, because it changes how you feel, act, and respond each day. You know how to be still, sans guilt or shame. Most days feel peaceful and calm. Your bodys fuel and strength has become a priority. Your mortality doesnt shake you to your core. Youre more present and, therefore, grateful (or is it vice versa?). Youre kinder and gentler to your family. You treat yourself as your own best friend. You know, feel, trust and follow that you do and are enough. You hear your intuition clearly now, and allow it to be your biggest guide. You are now 40. The cancer has not returned. Your hair is exactly how you like it. Your loves remain your loves. Your relationships have strengthened. Youre easier to forgive others and yourself. 2018 Michelle has been cracked wide open. 2018 Michelle has decided to leave the nest. 2018 Michelle has flew. Love, Current Michelle *Psst, reader! Want to be the first to know about this discovery group? Sign up for my one-on-one waitlist and youll get first crack at it next month!

Most people are grateful to report to work
Most people are grateful to report to work, often looking forward to the next paycheck. However, there are some employees whose companies have suffer from a loss of public confidence. There are several factors behind it, and politics would play a hand. Theres notlagehing these people could do about it unless they happen to be spin doctors. If youre one of them, then you must be struggling with motivation on a daily basis. Furthermore, you must deal with quizzical looks, if not disapproving stares. And there are days when making through the day would be a bit too much. Dont worry about the small stuff. You read it right. Here are five ways to deal with itThink of it as a blessing in disguise. Crises like this one will enable you to rise up to the challenge. You wont go down without a fight. You may sound like a professional athlete, which could surprise you. Theres no other way. This mindset will help you solve half of your problems. (And the imaginary ones are included.) This will lea d to the next item.Challenges can turn you into a better person. You dont have many options, which doesnt mean theres no way out. If youre in the pits, then theres no other way than to go up. Lets put it in another way You must keep on pushing. Youre not on your own, though.Misery loves company. You must be able to see the humor in it, as tough situations will bring you closer with your workmates. Youll need the support from them more than ever. When youre having doubts, then its time someone will encourage you. And who else will give you the positive vibes?Avoid the newspapers, as well as social media. Youll feel more miserable if you browse it. Theres another way, though. You might try to laugh at it especially if theres no iota of truth on it. What if theres an ounce of it? Youll give it a benefit of a doubt, which can affect your performance. You can talk with your colleague. You can also assess your standing. If you have a family, then talk with them. Its not your (sole) decisi on to make.Theres a light at the end of the tunnel. Theres a way if you want a solution. If its beyond your control, then make sure that you keep on doing your job. Youre too old for peer pressure, and hasty decisions are the last thing to do. Be sensible, if not be reasonable about it.If you choose not to take heed of the above, then the exit door will be your likely option. Its important to leave on good terms with your boss and your workmates. Its a small world, so theres a good chance that youll meet them (or collaborate with them). Moreover, you must keep in mind that youre an employee of the company. You dont have a major hand on the problem unless your department is directly involved in it.
